Shinners Plumbing commenced business in 1953 under the trading name of J. P. Shinners with Jack Shinners the principal with one apprentice.
Jack Shinners commenced work as a 15 year old apprentice with G. L. Godfrey being the major plumbing contractor in Dandenong after arriving from Bendigo to carry out sewer constructions which were commenced in the market town.
Jack completed his apprenticeship with Godfreys and continued to be employed by them as a registered plumber for approx. 20 years.
In 1953 Jack decided to branch out in his own business specialising in sewer connections by then he was very well known in the area, taking on an apprentice from the beginning.
The apprentice (Norm Hughes) was to remain with J. P. Shinners and later Shinners Plumbing Pty Ltd for his entire working life (over 55 years).
With Dandenong growing from a busy market town into a very large industrial and commercial centre with large companies such as Iveco International Trucks and W.J. Heinz just to name a few, work was plentiful.
Jack employed his eldest son Kevin and eventually Brian and Daryl (2 more siblings) and changed the Company name to J. P. Shinners & Sons Pty Ltd.
When Jack retired at around 70 years of age, Kevin Brian and Daryl took over the management of the business with eventually Kevin’s son (Matthew) joining the firm, another of Kevin’s sons and a nephew have both worked in the business over the years and Jack’s daughter Pam carrying out office work for the business.
